In-Depth Information
Ono Family Restaurant AMERICAN Breakfast at this small coffee shop is
a big deal here, with eggs Florentine (two poached eggs, blanched spinach, and
hollandaise sauce) leading the pack, and eggs Canterbury (much like eggs Bene-
dict, but with more ingredients) following close behind. Steak and eggs; banana,
coconut, and macadamia-nut pancakes; and dozens of omelet choices also
attract throngs of loyalists. Lunch is no slouch either, with scads of fish, veggie,
steak, tuna, and turkey sandwiches to choose from, and Ono beef or buffalo
burgers with various toppings highlighting the menu. The gourmet hamburger
with fries and soup demands an after-lunch siesta. The most popular item on the
kids' menu is keiki burgers with fries.
4-1292 Kuhio Hwy., Kapaa. & 808/822-1710. Kids' menu, highchairs, boosters, crayons. Most items less
than $8; kids' menu $4.25. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Daily 7am-2pm.
EN ROUTE TO THE NORTH SHORE
Duane's Ono-Char Burger HAMBURGERS This roadside burger stand
has been serving up hefty, all-beef burgers for generations. (And now there are
Boca burgers, for vegetarians.) The teriyaki sauce and blue cheese are only part
of the secret of Duane's beefy, smoky, and legendary ono-char burgers, which
come in several styles: teriyaki, mushroom, cheddar, barbecue, and the Special,
with grilled onions, sprouts, and two cheeses. The broiled fish sandwich
(another marvel of the seasoned old grill) and the marionberry ice-cream shake,
a three-berry combo, are popular as well. The kids' menu and outdoor seating
on picnic tables make this a must-stop as you drive to the North Shore.
On Kuhio Hwy., Anahola. & 808/822-9181. Kids' menu. Hamburgers $3.90-$6.20; kids' menu
$2.75-$3.65. MC, V. Mon-Sat 10am-6pm; Sun 11am-6pm.

EXPENSIVE
Bamboo Bamboo SEAFOOD/PASTA/PIZZA This elegant, open-air eatery
in the Hanalei Center offers a range of fresh fish, pastas, filet mignon, lamb,
pizza, and light dinners (fish sandwich or fish and chips). The kids' menu fea-
tures such standbys as mac and cheese and pizza. On weekends, they fire up the
brick oven and offer a range of interesting pizza pies, like the white pizza with
garlic, tomatoes, basil or pesto, and chicken; or you can build your own. Also
on weekends, there's live music in the evening.
Hanalei Center, Hanalei. & 808/826-1177. Kids' menu, highchairs, boosters, sassy seats, crayons. Reserva-
tions recommended. Main courses $18-$30; kids' menu $8-$10. AE, DC, MC, V. Tues-Sun 11:30am-2:30pm.

La Cascata MEDITERRANEAN/SOUTHERN ITALIAN The
North Shore's special-occasion restaurant is sumptuous—a Sicilian spree in
Eden. Although they accommodate kids, make this one an adults' night out. Try
to get here before dark, so you can enjoy the views of Bali Hai, the persimmon-
colored sunset, and the waterfalls of Waialeale, all an integral part of the feast.
Click your heels on the terra-cotta floors, take in the trompe l'oeil vines, train
your eyes through the concertina windows, and pretend you're being served on
a terrazzo in Sicily. The dazzling menu offers Mediterranean-inspired food made
with fresh local ingredients. Polenta, charred peppers, Kauai asparagus, organic
Kauai vegetables, risottos, ragouts, grilled fresh fish, and vegetable napoleons are
colorful and tasty, and beautifully presented.
