Bubba Burgers AMERICAN Here at the house of Bubba they dish out
humor, great T-shirts, and burgers nonpareil, along with tempeh burgers for veg-
etarians. Grilled fresh-fish sandwiches cater to the sensible, fish and chips to the
carefree, and fish burgers to the undecided. But old-fashioned hamburgers are
still the main attraction. No kids' menu, but the kids will be more interested in
the Slopper (open-faced with chili), the half-pound Big Bubba (three patties),
the Hubba Bubba (with rice, hot dog, and chili—a Bubba's plate lunch), and
old-fashioned burgers. For a burger joint, it's big on fish, too, with a daily trio
of fresh-fish specials, fish burgers, and fish and chips.

Kountry Kitchen AMERICAN Forget counting calories when you sit down to
the brawny omelets here. Kids can choose their own omelet fillings from several
possibilities. Sandwiches and American dinners (steak, fish, and chicken) are stan-
dard coffeehouse fare, but sometimes fresh-fish specials stand out. The kids' menu
features everything from pancakes to grilled cheese. Warning: Sit as far away from
the grill as possible; the smell of grease travels—and clings to your clothes.

menu $4 breakfast, $4.40 lunch. MC, V. Daily 6am-2pm.
Mermaids Cafe ISLAND STYLE Here's the place to pick up healthy food
for the kids without dipping into their college fund. This tiny sidewalk cafe, with
brisk takeout and a handful of tables on Kapaa's main drag, serves up health food
in gourmet sauces: tofu or chicken satay, chicken coconut curry plate, and seared
ahi wrap (made with the chef 's special blend of garlic, jalapeño, lemon grass, kaf-
fir lime, basil, and cilantro, then wrapped in a spinach tortilla)—all fabulous. The
fresh-squeezed lemonade is made daily, and you can choose white or organic
brown rice. Because of the limited seating, it's best to get takeout for the beach.

Norberto's El Café MEXICAN ¡Olé! Finally there's an inexpensive, healthy
Mexican restaurant where the kids will be welcome. The lard-free, home-style
fare here includes top-notch chiles rellenos with homemade everything, vegetar-
ian selections by request and, if you're lucky, fresh-fish enchiladas. All of the
sauces are made from scratch, and the salsa comes red-hot with homegrown chili
peppers fresh from the chef 's garden. Norberto's signature is the spinachy
Hawaiian taro-leaf enchiladas, a Mexican version of laulau, served with cheese
and taro or with chicken. Kids' plates include entree plus soup, beans, and rice.
