Dali Deli/Café Cara DELI/ITALIAN Owner Elizabeth Foley opened
this popular deli (no, it was not named after the Dalai Lama, but is a combina-
tion of her boyfriend's name, Dan, and her name, Liz) in 1997. It was mobbed,
mainly for the fresh, healthy, gourmet food (the portobello mushroom sandwich
is not to be missed); the scrumptious breakfasts; and the very tempting bakery
items. No kids' menu, but they'll likely be happy with the selection of items.

Kalaheo Coffee Co. & Cafe COFFEEHOUSE/CAFE This coffeehouse
(with a worldwide selection of coffee beans) also serves masterful breakfasts: bur-
ritos; veggie omelets with sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms; Belgian waffles;
and bagels. At lunch, the fabulous grilled-turkey burgers are the headliner on a
list of winners. Fresh-from-the-garden salads brighten up the day. The tasty,
inexpensive soup changes daily. The cinnamon “knuckles” (baked fresh daily),
lilikoi cheesecake, and fresh apple pie and carrot cake are more reasons to stop
by. No kids' menu, but there's plenty for them to choose from, plus there are
small toys to entertain the tots.

inside and out. A riot of fishing balls suspended in nets, plants everywhere, and
a labyrinthine dining room make for a unique environment. The Green Garden
is known for its inexpensive fresh-fish sandwiches, lilikoi-cream pies and, at din-

Hanapepe Cafe GOURMET VEGETARIAN/ITALIAN It's worth the
drive to bring the kids to this small gourmet delight. This is the place to get
going in the morning with espresso, multigrain fruit pancakes, and homemade
sourdough French toast. At lunch they elevate the garden burger to gourmet sta-
tus: You can top yours with sautéed mushrooms, grilled onions, pesto, fresh-
grated Parmesan, and other choices. Other lunch notables: fresh rosemary home
fries, a heroic grilled vegetable sandwich, and whole roasted garlic heads. Kids
have their own menu (pastas and sandwiches). On the Friday-night dinner
menu, the Italian specialties shine: Southwestern-style lasagna or lasagna quat-
tro formaggio with spinach, mushrooms, and four cheeses; crepes; and the
nightly special with the cafe's famous marinara sauce—terrific choices all.
There's no liquor license, so if you want wine, bring your own.
