Kauai Beach Villas These beachfront condos are a good option for families
seeking more space and privacy than they'd get elsewhere in Lihue. The only
drawback is the unsafe swimming conditions at the beautiful but windy white-
sand beach; the kids should content themselves with the pools spread across the
property. Each unit is outfitted with a fully equipped kitchen, a washer/dryer,
and a lanai big enough for two lounge chairs, a table, and four chairs. Each two-
bedroom unit has a lanai off each bedroom, too. The immaculately landscaped
grounds feature tennis courts, barbecue areas, and a volleyball court. The Wailua
Municipal golf course is next door.

from the airport, 1 mile from Lihue, and within walking distance of shops and
restaurants. The spacious rooms have a variety of bedding, including the family-
friendly room with a queen bed and two twin beds ($95 per night). Each unit
contains a fridge, microwave, wet bar, TV, coffeemaker, and ocean view; some
have private lanais, and the suites have sitting areas. Owner Steve Layne offers
friendly service, lots of advice on activities (the entire staff happily uses their
connections to get you discounts), and even complimentary use of beach gear,
golf clubs (a course is nearby, as are tennis courts), and coolers. Warning: The
inn is located close to the airport and harbor, plus daytime street traffic can
make this property noisy.

Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa This is one of Hawaii's best lux-
ury hotels. The four-story resort, built into the oceanside bluffs, spreads over 50
acres that overlook Shipwreck Beach (which is too rough for most swimmers) at
the end of the road in Poipu. The $250-million Hyatt uses the island architecture
of the mid-1920s to recapture the Old Hawaii of the Matson Line steamship era.
The airy atmosphere replicates the casual elegance of a grand plantation over-
looking the sea. The result is a comfortable, unostentatious place for everyone
from children to grandparents. Your 3-year-old will probably want to try the 150-
foot water slide (a 47-second ride through a stream of warm water) before you
