LIHUE & ENVIRONS
If you need to stay overnight near the airport, try the Garden Island Inn (p. 349).
VERY EXPENSIVE
Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club If your tykes love the water
(they go in at 8am and reluctantly leave only for bathroom breaks and lunch),
this is your place. Water is everywhere throughout the resort: lagoons, waterfalls,
fountains, a 5-acre circular swimming pool (the largest on the island), and a ter-
rific stretch of beach out front. The lagoons are home to six islands that serve as
an exotic minizoo, which lends an air of fantasy to the place and, along with the
enormous pool and children's program, makes the resort popular with families.
Guest rooms are fairly large and comfortable, with fabulous views of gold-
sand Kalapaki Beach. Amenities like free meals for kids under age 12, a compli-
mentary shuttle to the airport (only a mile away), cultural activities, a children's
pool, and a great kids' program with plenty to do (ukulele and hula lessons, pot-
tery painting classes, and more) add up to a great place to stay.

EXPENSIVE
Radisson Kauai Beach Resort When Radisson took over this oceanfront
property several years ago, they spent $10 million remodeling all of the guest
rooms, creating a new sand pool, and building a health club. The property,
located 4 miles north of Lihue, commands a beachfront setting next door to a
top-ranked municipal golf course. The location is good (and it's the main reason
for families to stay here), about equidistant from both north- and south-shore
activities, and also close to the Wailua River and its kayaking, water-skiing, river
tours, historic sites, and drive-by waterfalls. Children 5 and under eat free with
