9 Entertainment for the Whole Family
There are family entertainment options on Lanai, just not a lot of them. If you
plan your trip right, you may enjoy special events on the island like the annual
Pineapple Festival, generally the first weekend in July, when some of Hawaii's
best musicians arrive to show their support for Lanai. (See “Kids' Favorite
Hawaii Events,” in chapter 2.) Other special events include the Aloha Festival
(end of Sept or first week in Oct) and the Christmas Festival (first Sat in Dec).
The only regular entertainment venues are the Lanai Playhouse, at the cor-
ner of 7th and Lanai avenues in Lanai City ( & 808/565-7500 ), which in addi-
tion to showing movies has special events; and the two resorts, The Lodge at
Koele (p. 333) and Manele Bay Hotel (p. 333). Both The Lodge at Koele and
Manele Bay Hotel are known for their Visiting Artists Program, which brings
acclaimed literary and performing artists from across the country to this tiny
island to offer free concerts or lectures. Depending on the guest artists, kids
under 12 may be bored, but your preteens and teenagers might be stoked by
what's on offer (especially if the guest artist is a musician).
Listening to Storytellers and other children's activities are regular features at
the Lanai Library, Fraser Avenue near 5th Street, Lanai City ( & 808/565-6996 ).
The events include programs for preschoolers, kids ages 6 to 8, and kids ages 9
to 12; they're usually free and open to everyone.
