A perfect activity for a rainy day in Lanai City is the Lanai Art Center, 333 7th
St., located in the heart of the small town. They have programs for every-

from across Hawaii visit this home-grown art program and teach a variety
of classes including raku (Japanese pottery), silk printing, silk screening,
pareu making (creating your own design on this islanders' wrap), gyotaku
(printing a real fish on your own T-shirt), watercolor drawing, and a variety
of other island crafts. The cost is usually in the $25 range for the 2- to 3-hour
classes plus the cost of materials; parents usually stick around to enjoy the
class with their child. For more information, call & 808/565-7503 or visit

Koloiki Ridge Nature hike through 5 miles of Koele upland forest. The fee is $15
and since the hike is so long, children 12 and over are more likely to enjoy it. (You
may end up carrying the younger ones.) The Manele Bay Hotel ( & 808/565-
7700; www.lanai-resorts.com) has a 1 1 2 -hour fitness hike along an old fisherman's
trail; the fee is $20, and kids as young as 7 can do this shorter hike.

8 Shopping with Your Kids
Amazingly there is shopping on this tiny island. Okay, it's not in big department
stores; in fact, there aren't any brand-name chain stores here, just small ma-and-
pa general stores and a few boutiques. Allow at least a half-day to wander around
Dole Square checking out the shops listed below.
