4 Family-Friendly Dining
Your children will be welcome in Lanai's restaurants, which are a curious mix of
innocence and sophistication, with strong cross-cultural elements that liven up
the culinary offerings. You can dine like a sultan on this island, but be prepared
for high prices. The tony hotel restaurants require deep pockets (or bottomless
expense accounts), and there is only a handful of options.
You'll find the restaurants reviewed below on the map on p. 331.
VERY EXPENSIVE
Formal Dining Room RUSTIC AMERICAN/UPCOUNTRY HAWAI-
IAN Get a sitter for the kids and enjoy this romantic setting: a roaring fire,
bountiful sprays of orchids, sienna-colored walls, and well-dressed women in
pearls sitting across from men in jackets, with wine buckets tableside. The menu
highlights American favorites with intense flavors. The Dining Room is known
for its use of fresh herbs, vegetables, and fruit grown on the island, harvested just
minutes away. It's extremely pricey and not really appropriate for children under
12, although they do have a kids' menu with spaghetti, fried chicken, and a BLT.
In The Lodge at Koele. & 808/565-4580. Kids' menu, highchairs, boosters. Reservations required. Jackets
requested for men. Entrees $44-$45; kids' menu $3.75-$7.75. AE, DC, MC, V. Daily 6-9:30pm.
Ihilani MEDITERRANEAN Here's another place that's probably best for
an adult night out, although accommodations are made for children. Ihilani is
Lanai's top gourmet restaurant, with a formal atmosphere (jackets for men) and
inspiring food at eye-popping prices. Standouts include appetizers like homemade
goat cheese and spinach ravioli with roasted eggplant, and asparagus salad in a sun-
dried tomato cilantro sauce, and entrees like baked onaga and citrus in a sea-salt
crust, and lavender-honey glazed duck breast. The prix-fixe menu is very complete
and comes with selected wines. If you bring the kids, there's a menu especially for
them, with cheeseburgers as the star attraction for the under-12 crowd.
In the Manele Bay Hotel. & 808/565-2296. Kids' menu, highchairs, boosters, crayons. Reservations strongly
recommended. Jackets requested for men. Main courses $23-$40; set menu $100 without wine, $150 with
wine; kids' menu $4-$13. AE, DC, MC, V. Tues-Sat 6-9:30pm.

Hulopoe Court HAWAIIAN REGIONAL The main dining room at
