MUSEUM STORES
Molokai Museum Gift Shop The restored 1878 sugar mill sits 1,500 feet
above the town of Kualapuu. It's a considerable drive from town, but a good
cause for those who'd like to support the museum and the handful of local arti-
sans who sell their crafts, fabrics, cookbooks, quilt sets, and other gift items in
the tiny shop. There's also a modest selection of cards, T-shirts, coloring books
and, at Christmas, handmade ornaments made of lauhala and koa. Meyer Sugar
Mill, Hwy. 470 (just after the turnoff for the Ironwood Hills Golf Course, and 2 miles below Kalau-
papa Overlook), Kalae. & 808/567-6436.
SPORTS SHOP
Molokai Fish & Dive Here you'll find the island's largest selection of T-shirts
and souvenirs, crammed in among fishing, snorkeling, and outdoor gear that
you can rent or buy. Find your way among the fish nets, boogie boards, diving
equipment, bamboo rakes, beach towels, postcards, juices and soft drinks, dis-
posable cameras, and staggering miscellany of this chockablock store. One entire
wall is lined with T-shirts, and the selection of Molokai books and souvenirs is
extensive. The staff is happy to point out the best snorkeling spots of the day. In
Kaunakakai. & 808/553-5926.
SWEETS FOR THE SWEET
Kamoi Snack-N-Go The Kamoi specialty: sweets and icy treats. Ice cream
made by Dave's on Oahu comes in flavors such as green tea, lychee sherbet, ube
(a brilliant purple color, made from Okinawan sweet potato), haupia, mango,
and many other tropical—and traditional—flavors. Schoolchildren and their
parents line up for the cones, shakes, sundaes, and popular Icee floats served at
this tiny snack shop. If the ice cream doesn't tempt you, maybe something in the
aisles full of candies will. It's takeout only; no tables. In Kamoi Professional Center.

9 Entertainment for the Whole Family
Molokai is a very family-oriented place. The babies, the teenagers, even the
grandparents go everywhere together. Your troops will be warmly welcomed
everywhere. There aren't a lot of entertainment options on this rural island,
though; families generally make their own entertainment with beach picnics,
children's baseball games, backyard music, and the offerings below.
Hotel Molokai, in Kaunakakai ( & 808/553-5347 ), offers live entertainment
from local musicians poolside and in the dining room on Friday from 4 to
11pm. This very home-spun entertainment is filled with families from toddlers
to grandparents. Your teen might be too cool for this local Hawaii music, but
the entire family is welcome. (The waitresses will all want to hold and kiss the
infants.) With its South Seas ambience and poolside setting, it's become the
island's premier venue for local and visiting entertainers.
Movie buffs, too, finally have a place to call their own on Molokai. Maunaloa
Cinemas ( & 808/552-2707 ) is a triplex theater that shows first-run movies in the
middle of Maunaloa town—four screenings a day at each of the three theaters.
Also in Maunaloa, the lounge at The Lodge at Molokai Ranch ( & 888/
627-8082 or 808/660-2824) offers live music Friday and Saturday, from 7 to
9pm, ranging from Hawaiian songs to keiki hula. Everyone is welcome, even if
you are not staying at the lodge.
