The Lodge at Molokai Ranch In 2004, Sheraton lost the management con-
tract to this quaint 22-room inn, and the Molokai Ranch, which previously ran
the hotel, reclaimed the helm. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the
World—Hotel Hana Maui is the only other Hawaii hotel in this group—the
lodge is very family-friendly, with kids 18 and younger staying free, and those
under 12 eating free with an accompanying adult. This upcountry lodge, located
in the cool climate of the tiny village of Maunaloa, sits on 8 nicely landscaped
acres located 6 miles and a 20- to 25-minute shuttle ride to the nearest beach.
Designed to resemble a 1930s-style Hawaii ranch owner's private home, the
Lodge features a giant fireplace, huge wooden beam construction, panoramic
views, and lots of details—cuffed cowboy boots beside the door, old books lin-
ing the shelves—to make it look and feel like a real ranch. Guests step back in
time to a Hawaii of yesteryear.
The guest rooms, each with individual country decor, are of two types,
“deluxe” and “luxury.” A deluxe room accommodates up to four with a choice
of a king bed or two double beds, or you can get connecting rooms if you need
two bathrooms. The luxury rooms are spacious corner units that feature either
greenhouse-type skylights or a cozy king daybed nestled in a comfy alcove; it also
accommodates up to four, but families will be better off in the deluxe rooms.
Other amenities that make this a good family place are a dining room with a
kids' menu, an outdoor heated swimming pool, and access to a host of activities.
The Lodge, along with the Beach Village at Molokai Ranch (see “Luxury Camp-
ing” on p. 316), sits on the 53,000-acre Molokai Ranch and is geared toward
outdoorsy types, with a shuttle to the beach and to activities (horseback riding,
mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, beach activities, and more, rang-
ing in price from $30-$125). There's also wonderful local entertainment in the
Great Room in the evening; even if you don't stay here, come for the free enter-
tainment, which is great for kids.
