GALLERIES
Hana Coast Gallery This gallery is a good reason to go to Hana: It's an
aesthetic and cultural experience that informs as it enlightens. Tucked away in
the posh hideaway hotel, the gallery is known for its high level of curatorship
and commitment to the cultural art of Hawaii. The 3,000-square-foot gallery is
devoted entirely to Hawaii artists, featuring sculptures, paintings, prints, feather
work, stone work, and carvings in displays that are so natural they could well
exist in someone's home. In the Hotel Hana-Maui. & 808/248-8636.
Lahaina Arts Society Galleries With its membership of more than 185 Maui
artists, the nonprofit Lahaina Arts Society is an excellent community resource.
Changing monthly exhibits in the Banyan Tree and Old Jail galleries offer a
good look at the island's artistic well: two-dimensional art, fiber art, ceramics,
sculpture, prints, jewelry, and more. In the shade of the humongous banyan tree
in the square across from Pioneer Inn, “Art in the Park” fairs are offered every
second and fourth weekend of the month. 648 Wharf St., Lahaina & 808/661-3228.
GIFTS & SOUVENIRS
Sig Zane Designs Wailuku Sig Zane is synonymous with the best in aloha
wear. Whether it's a T-shirt, pareu, duffel bag, aloha shirt, or muumuu, a Sig
Zane design has depth and sizzle. The staff is helpful and willing to share the
background of each design, so you will learn much about the culture, botany,
mythology, and beauty of the islands. 53 Market St., Wailuku. & 808/249-8997.
Totally Hawaiian Gift Gallery This gallery makes a good browse for its
selection of Niihau shell jewelry, excellent Hawaiian CDs, Norfolk pine bowls,
Hawaiian quilt kits, soaps, handcrafted dolls, and hundreds of other “finds.” It's
also in the Maui Marriott in Kaanapali ( & 808/667-2171 ). In the Lahaina Cannery
Mall, 1221 Honoapiilani Hwy., Lahaina. & 808/667-2558.
MARKETS
Maui's produce has long been a source of pride for islanders. The farmers' mar-
kets are where you'll find a fresh, inexpensive selection of Maui-grown fruit, veg-
etables, flowers, and plants. Some farmers' markets also feature crafts and
gourmet foods. The current farmers' markets are at Kahului Shopping Center,
on Wednesday from 6am to 1pm; Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului, on
Tuesday and Friday from 8:30am to 2:30pm; Wailuku Farmer's Market on Mar-
ket Street, Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm; and Suda Store in Kihei
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1 to 5pm.

An inside Look at Lei Making
If you are in Lahaina on the second or last Thursday of the month, stroll
by the front lawn of the Baldwin House, 120 Dickenson St. (at Front St.),
for a splendid look at lei-making and an opportunity to meet the gre-
garious seniors of Lahaina. From 10am to 4pm, they demonstrate lei mak-
ing, sell their own floral creations, and talk story about the old days in
Hawaii.
