In-Depth Information
Playgrounds
The county has a range of playgrounds in the various county parks. In Lahaina,
playgrounds can be found at the Lahaina Recreation Center, Shaw Street and
Honoapiilani Highway; Pauna Park, Lahainaluna Road and Paunau Street; and
Wahikuli Park, just before Kaanapali on Honoapiilani Highway. North of
Lanaina in Honokowai, there's a playground in Honokowai Park, on Lower
Honoapiilani Road. In Kihei, playgrounds can be found at Kalama Park and
Kamaole Park III, both on South Kihei Road.
For more information, contact the Parks Department at & 808/270-7230
or check www.co.maui.hi.us/youth/maui/leisure/facilities.htm.
Skateboard Parks
The Maui YMCA sponsors the use of two skate parks, Kalama Park in Kihei and
Keopuolani Regional Park in Kahului, with trained monitors supervising the
kids. Visitors are welcome to use the skateboard facilities (bring your own board)
for a $5 daily fee. For more information, call the Maui YMCA at &
808/
242-9007.
TENNIS
Maui has excellent public tennis courts; all are free and available from daylight
to sunset. (A few are even lit for night play until 10pm.) The courts are available
on a first-come, first-served basis; when someone's waiting, limit your play to 45
minutes. For a complete list of public courts, call Maui County Parks and
Recreation ( & 808/243-7230 ). But most public courts require a wait and are
not conveniently located near the major resort areas, so most visitors are likely
to play at their own hotels for a fee. The exceptions to this are in Kihei (which
has courts in Kalama Park on S. Kihei Rd., and in Kihei Beach Preserve Park on
W. Waipualani Rd., behind the Maui Sunset Condo), in Lahaina (courts are in
Malu'uou o lele Park at Front and Shaw sts.; and at the Lahaina Civic Center on
Honoapiilani Hwy.), and Hana (courts are in Hana Park, on the Hana Hwy.).
Private tennis courts are available at most resorts and hotels on the island. The
Kapalua Tennis Garden and Village Tennis Center, Kapalua Resort ( & 808/
669-5677; www.kapaluamaui.com), is home to the Kapalua Open, which fea-
tures the largest purse in the state, on Labor Day weekend. Court rentals are $10
per person for resort guests and $12 per person for nonguests. The staff will
match you up with a partner if you need one. In Wailea, try the Wailea Tennis
Club, 131 Wailea Iki Place ( & 808/879-1958; www.wailea-resort.com), with
11 Plexipave courts. Court fees are $12 per player.

THE SHOPPING SCENE
The island of Maui is a shopaholic's dream as well as an arts center, with a large
number of resident artists who show their works in dozens of galleries and
countless gift shops. Maui is also the queen of specialty products, an agricultural
cornucopia that includes Kula onions, upcountry proteas, Kaanapali coffee,
world-renowned potato chips, and many other taste treats that are shipped
worldwide.
Shopping on Maui involves relatively painless parking (except in Lahaina,
where even the parking lots in shopping centers seem full all the time). Most
stores are open from 10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday and from noon
to 5 or 6pm on Sunday. Big chain stores and department stores are open late on
Friday and Saturday. Be sure to call the store before you go. Sales tax in Hawaii
