HALIIMAILE (ON THE WAY TO UPCOUNTRY MAUI)
Haliimaile General Store AMERICAN More than a decade later,
Bev Gannon, one of the 12 original Hawaiian regional Cuisine chefs, is still
going strong at her foodie haven in the pineapple fields. You'll dine at tables set
on old wood floors under high ceilings (sound ricochets fiercely here), in a
peach-colored room emblazoned with works by local artists. The food, a blend
of eclectic American with ethnic touches, puts an innovative spin on Hawaiian
regional Cuisine. Even the fresh-catch sandwich on the lunch menu is anything
but prosaic. Sip the lilikoi lemonade and nibble the sashimi napoleon or the
house salad—island greens with mandarin oranges, onions, toasted walnuts, and
blue-cheese crumble. All are notable items on a menu that bridges Hawaii with
Gannon's Texas roots. Kids have their own meals like cheesy cheese pizza, deli-
cious macaroni, barbecue chicken, and cookies and ice cream.
Haliimaile Rd., Haliimaile. & 808/572-2666. www.haliimailegeneralstore.com. Kids' menu, highchairs,
boosters, crayons. Reservations recommended. Lunch $10-$20; dinner $20-$30; kids' menu $4-$9. DC, MC,
V. Mon-Fri 11am-2:30pm; daily 5:30-9:30pm.
MAKAWAO & PUKALANI
Casanova Italian Restaurant ITALIAN Look for the tiny veranda with
a few stools, always full, in front of a deli at Makawao's busiest intersection—
that's the most visible part of the Casanova restaurant and lounge. Makawao's
nightlife center contains a stage, dance floor, restaurant, and bar—and food to
love and remember. This is pasta heaven; try the spaghetti Fra Diavolo or the
spinach gnocchi in a fresh tomato-Gorgonzola sauce. Other choices include a
huge pizza selection, grilled lamb chops in an Italian mushroom marinade, every
possible type of pasta, and luscious desserts. Our personal picks on a stellar
menu: garlic spinach topped with Parmesan and pine nuts, polenta with radic-
chio (the mushrooms and cream sauce are fabulous!), and tiramisu, the best on
the island. They don't have a kid's menu, but they will whip up spaghetti (plain,
with butter or with cheese) for just $5.
1188 Makawao Ave. & 808/572-0220. www.casanovamaui.com. Highchairs, boosters, crayons. Reserva-
tions recommended for dinner. Main courses $20-$24; 12-in. pizzas from $10. DC, DISC, MC, V. Mon-Sat
11:30am-2pm and 5:30-9pm; Sun 5:30-9pm; dancing Wed-Sat 9:45pm-1am. Lounge daily 5:30pm-
12:30am or 1am; deli daily 8am-6:30pm.
KULA (AT THE BASE OF HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK)
Kula Lodge HAWAIIAN REGIONAL/AMERICAN Don't let the dinner
prices scare you; the Kula Lodge is equally enjoyable, if not more so, at break-
fast and lunch, when the prices are lower and the views through the picture win-
dows have an eye-popping intensity. The million-dollar vista spans the flanks of
Haleakala, rolling 3,200 feet down to central Maui, the ocean, and the West
Maui Mountains. The Kula Lodge has always been known for its breakfasts: fab-
ulous eggs Benedict, including a vegetarian version with Kula onions, shiitake
mushrooms, and scallions; legendary banana mac-nut pancakes; and a highly
recommended tofu scramble with green onions, Kula vegetables, and garlic
chives. Kids can order cinnamon-raisin French toast, keiki pancakes, or an egg,
