pasta and sandwich lovers, hefty steak eaters, and sensible diners who go for the
inexpensive fresh Kula green salad. Grateful Dead posters line the walls, and a
covey of gleaming motorcycles is invariably parked outside. It's loud and lively,
irreverent, and unpretentious. Sandwiches are the highlight, ranging from Tofu
Extraordinaire to Mom's egg salad on croissant to garden burgers to grilled
chicken. Tofu wraps and mountain-size Cobb salads are popular. For the reck-
less, large coffee shakes come with mounds of whipped cream. Daily specials
include fresh seafood and other surprises—all home-style cooking, made from
scratch, down to the pesto mayonnaise and herb bread. At dinner, selections are
geared toward good-value family dining, from affordable full dinners to pastas
and burgers. A kids' menu is available for all three meals, with buttered noodles
and mac and cheese the favorites.

Peggy Sue's AMERICAN Just for a moment, forget that diet and take a
leap. It's Peggy Sue's to the rescue! This 1950s-style diner has oodles of charm
and is a swell place to spring for the best chocolate malt on the island. You'll also
find sodas, shakes, floats, egg creams, milkshakes, and scoops of made-on-Maui
Roselani brand gourmet ice cream—14 flavors. Old-fashioned soda-shop stools,
an Elvis Presley Boulevard sign, and jukeboxes on every Formica table serve as a
backdrop for the famous burgers (and garden burgers), brushed with teriyaki
sauce and served with all the goodies. The fries are great, too. The kids' menu
includes grilled cheese and PB&J sandwiches, hot dogs, and hamburgers, all
served with fries.

Shaka Sandwich & Pizza PIZZA How many “best pizzas” are there on
Maui? It depends on which shore you're on, the west or the south. At this south-
shore old-timer, award-winning pizzas share the limelight with New York-
style heroes and Philly cheese steaks, calzones, salads, homemade garlic bread,
and homemade meatball sandwiches. Shaka uses fresh Maui produce, long-
simmering sauces, and homemade Italian bread. Choose thin or Sicilian thick
crust with gourmet toppings: Maui onions, spinach, anchovies, jalapeños, and a
spate of other vegetables. Don't be misled by the whiteness of the white pizza;
with the perfectly balanced flavors of olive oil, garlic, and cheese, you won't even
miss the tomato sauce. Clam-and-garlic pizza, spinach pizza (with olive oil,
spinach, garlic, and mozzarella), and the Shaka Supreme (with at least 10 top-
pings) will satisfy even the insatiable. No kids' menu, but with the pizza selec-
tion, your children will be in heaven.

The Shops at Wailea, in a sprawling location between the Grand Wailea Hotel
and Outrigger Wailea Resort, has added a spate of new shops and restaurants

House is here, as well as Tommy Bahama's Tropical Cafe & Emporium, Hon-
olulu Coffee Company Café Wailea, Cheeseburger, Mai Tai's and Rock-n-
