railing. Steps lead to the outdoor tables, where the award-winning seafood dishes
come to you with the backdrop of Lanai across the channel. This place is proof
that parents can eat well and the kids will be happy too. The prawn and basil
wontons, fresh fish over wilted arugula and bean sprouts, and ahi and ono tem-
pura with miso and lime-basil sauce are among Pacific'o's memorable offerings.
If you like seafood, sunsets, and touches of India and Indonesia in your fresh-
from-the-sea dining choices, you should be happy here. Kids have their own
menu ranging from hamburgers to the bestselling fish and chips, as well as their
own “drink” menu, including a lava flow (blended pineapple juice, coconut,
banana, and strawberry) and piña colada (blended pineapple juice and coconut).

Café O'Lei Lahaina AMERICAN The location for alfresco dining
could not be better: upper and lower decks with an unobstructed 180-degree
view of the ocean and the island of Lanai in the distance. Despite the fact that
this is Front Street, Lahaina, the great food is still at budget prices: The plate
lunch special is only $6.95. Because the view is so romantic, I recommend that
you come here for dinner before the sun sets, in order to take in that ocean
panorama as you dine on seared ahi, sautéed mahimahi, macadamia nut roast
duckling, Thai coconut lobster, jumbo shrimp, and calamari. Best prices in
town, and a kids' menu (fish filet, cheeseburger) to boot!
839 Front St. & 808/661-9491. Kids' menu, highchairs, boosters, crayons. Reservations recommended. Main
courses $6.50-$11 lunch, $14-$23 dinner; kids' menu $2.95-$4.95. AE, DISC, MC, V. Daily 10:30am-9:30pm.
Compadres Bar & Grill MEXICAN This place is so loud and full of laugh-
ter, no one will notice if your little darlings are acting up. You can sit inside with
the industrial motif or outside in the new open-air seating area. Beach fans can
pick up lunch or dinner at the takeout taqueria window. The food is classic Tex-
Mex, good any time of the day, beginning with huevos rancheros, egg burritos,
hotcakes, and omelets, and progressing to enchiladas and appetizers for the mar-
garita-happy crowd. Stay spare (vegetable enchilada in fresh spinach tortilla) or
get hefty (Texas T-bone and enchiladas). For kids 10 and under, there are both
American (corn dog, burger, chicken) and Mexican menus (nachos, quesadilla,
mini tacos, and chicken chingalinga), plus a great chocolate sundae for just
$1.85: Two scoops of ice cream covered with chocolate in a sugary tortilla. This
is a carefree place with a large capacity for merrymaking.

Kimo's STEAK/SEAFOOD Kimo's has a loyal following that keeps it from
falling into the faceless morass of waterfront restaurants serving surf-and-turf
with great sunset views. It's a formula restaurant that works not only because of
its oceanfront patio and upstairs dining room, but also because, for the price,
there are some satisfying choices and a kids' menu with food that kids want to
eat (grilled cheese, hamburger, chicken, and the very popular ribs). It's always
crowded, buzzing with people on a deck offering views of Molokai, Lanai, and
Kahoolawe. Burgers and sandwiches are affordable and consistent, and the fresh
catch in garlic-lemon and a sweet-basil glaze is a top seller. The waistline-defy-
ing hula pie—macadamia-nut ice cream in a chocolate-wafer crust with fudge
and whipped cream—originated here.
