KUAU
The Inn at Mama's Fish House Here's a place that kids will love, right
on a beach (though there's no swimming pool and sometimes the ocean is not
very swimmable). The fabulous location (nestled in a coconut grove on secluded
Kuau Beach), beautifully decorated interior (with island-style rattan furniture
and works by Hawaiian artists), full kitchen, and extras (Weber gas barbecue,
huge 27-in. TVs, and all the beach toys you can think of ) make this place a gem
for those seeking a centrally located vacation rental. It has everything, even
Mama's Fish House next door, where guests get a discount off lunch or dinner.
The one-bedrooms are nestled in tropical jungle (red ginger surrounds the gar-
den patio), while the two-bedrooms face the beach. Both have terra-cotta floors,
complete kitchens (even dishwashers), sofa beds, and free laundry facilities.
799 Poho Place (off the Hana Hwy. in Kuau), Paia, HI 96779. & 800/860-HULA or 808/579-9764. Fax

6). 3-night minimum stay. Cribs free. AE, DISC, MC, V. In room:A/C, TV/VCR, kitchen, fridge, coffeemaker, hair
dryer, iron.
AT THE END OF THE ROAD IN EAST MAUI: HANA
EXPENSIVE
Hotel Hana-Maui I highly recommend this little slice of paradise. Pic-
ture Shangri-La, Hawaiian-style: 66 acres rolling down to the sea in a remote
Hawaiian village, with a wellness center, two pools, and access to one of the best
beaches in Hana. This is the atmosphere, the landscape, and the culture of Old
Hawaii set in 21st-century accommodations. Every unit is excellent, but my
favorites are the Sea Ranch Cottages (especially nos. 215-218 for the best views
of turtles frolicking in the ocean), where individual duplex bungalows look out
over the craggy shoreline to the rolling surf. You step out of the over-size, open,
airy units (with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors) onto a huge lanai with views that
will stay with you long after your tan has faded. These comfy units have been
totally redecorated with every amenity you can think of, and you won't be
nickel-and-dimed for things like coffee and water—everything they give you,
from the homemade banana bread to the bottled water, is complimentary.
Cathedral ceilings, a plush feather bed, a giant-size soaking tub, Hawaiian art-
work, bamboo hardwood floors—this is luxury.
Families most likely will fit best in the rooms with two queen beds. Cribs will
fit in any room, but if you need a rollaway bed, look to the Bay Cottages for the
best fit. The white-sand beach (just a 5-min. shuttle away), top-notch wellness
center with some of the best massage therapists in Hawaii, and numerous activ-
ities (horseback riding, complimentary bicycles, tennis, pitch-and-putt golf ) all
add up to make this one of the top resorts in the state. There's no TV in the
rooms, but the Club Room has a giant-screen TV, plus VCR and Internet access.
