Maui Prince Hotel If you're looking for a vacation in a beautiful, tran-
quil spot with a golden-sand beach, here's your place. But if you plan to tour
Maui, you might try another hotel. The Maui Prince is at the end of the road,
far, far away from anything else on the island, so sightseeing in other areas would
require a lot of driving.
When you first see the stark-white hotel, it looks like a high-rise motel stuck
in the woods—but only from the outside. Inside, you'll discover an atrium gar-
den with a koi-filled waterfall stream, an ocean view from every room, and a
simplicity to the furnishings that makes some people feel uncomfortable and
others blissfully clutter-free. Rooms are small; book two connecting rooms and
you'll be a lot happier, or better yet, check out a suite. Kids from around the
world (there's a big Japanese clientele here) get together in the keiki program for
activities such as net fishing, sandcastle building, swimming, Hawaiian arts and
crafts, putting, Ping-Pong, shuffleboard, movies, and video games.
5400 Makena Alanui, Makena, HI 96753. & 800/321-6284 or 808/874-1111. Fax 808/879-8763.
www.mauiprincehotel.com. 310 units. $320-$490 double; from $600 suite. Extra person $40. Children 17 and
under stay free in parent's room. Cribs free, rollaway beds $35. Packages available. AE, DC, MC, V. Ameni-
ties: 4 restaurants; 2 bars w/local Hawaiian music nightly; 2 outdoor pools (adults' and children's); 36 holes
of golf (designed by Robert Trent Jones); 6 Plexipave tennis courts (2 lit for night play); fitness room; Jacuzzi;
watersports equipment rental; children's program; concierge; activities desk; business center; shopping
arcade; salon; room service; in-room massage; babysitting; same-day laundry service and dry cleaning. In

KULA (AT THE BASE OF HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK)
Lodgings in Kula are the closest options to the entrance of Haleakala National
Park (about 60 min. away).
Kili's Cottage If you're looking for a quiet getaway in the cool eleva-
tion of Kula, this sweet cottage, situated on 2 acres, is the place. The amenities
are numerous: large lanai, full kitchen, gas barbecue, washer/dryer, views, even
toys for the kids. The hostess, Kili Namau'u, who is the director of a Hawaiian-
language immersion school, greets each guest with royal aloha—from the flow-
ers (picked from the garden) that fill the house to the welcome basket filled with
tropical produce grown on the property. The only drawback is that Kula is about
