Inexpensive
Napili Sunset These clean, older, well-maintained units offer good
value for families. Imagine an old beach home that's been in the family for years.
At first glance, the plain two-story structures don't look like much, but the loca-
tion, the bargain prices, and the friendly staff are the real treasures here. In addi-
tion to daily maid service, the units all have full kitchens (with dishwashers),
ceiling fans, sofa beds, small dining rooms, and small bedrooms. The beach—
one of Maui's best—can get a little crowded, because the public beach access is
through this property (and everyone on Maui seems to want to come here). The
one- and two-bedroom units are all on the beach (the downstairs units have
lanais that lead right to the sand)—which means you won't have to schlep chairs,
coolers, or gear very far. The staff makes sure each unit has the basics—paper
towels, dishwasher soap, coffee filters, condiments—to get your stay off to a
good start. There are restaurants within walking distance.

KAPALUA
If you're interested in a luxurious condo or town house, consider Kapalua Vil-
las ( & 800/545-0018 or 808/669-8088; www.kapaluavillas.com). The palatial
units dotting the oceanfront cliffs and fairways of this idyllic coast are a (rela-
tive) bargain. The one- and two-bedroom condos go for $199 to $279, two-bed-
rooms for $299 to $469, and there are numerous package deals that save you
even more money.
Very Expensive
Kapalua Bay Hotel & Ocean Villas The oversize rooms (500 sq. ft.)
make it possible for a family of four to actually stay in and still be speaking to
one another at the end of a week. Each guest room has a sitting area with sofa,
a king bed or two double beds, and an entertainment center. If you need two
bathrooms, get two rooms. (Ask for the Family Package where the second room
is 50% off, plus 15% off the Keiki Day Program, for kids ages 5-10.) The prop-
erty fronts a palm-fringed gold-sand beach that's one of the best in Hawaii, great
for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, or beach combing. The hotel has an excel-
lent pool if the ocean is a bit too much for your keiki. Children enjoy sandcas-
tle contests, swimming, snorkeling, Hawaiian crafts, recreational games, hula,
and eco-adventures at the children's activities center. Kids ages 11 to 16 have
their own program, Adventure Seven, which will enthrall even the most jaded
preteens and teens.
