In-Depth Information
travelers is rental car break-ins. Never leave any valuables in your car, not
even in your trunk. Thieves can be in and out of your trunk faster than you
can open it with your own key. Be especially careful at high-risk areas such
as beaches and resorts. Never carry large amounts of cash with you. Stay
in well-lighted areas after dark. Don't hike on deserted trails alone.

3 Family-Friendly Accommodations
Maui has accommodations to fit every kind of family vacation, from deluxe
oceanfront resorts to reasonably priced condos to historic bed-and-breakfasts.
I'd suggest getting accommodations close to the activities you want to do on
Maui; otherwise, your vacation could turn into long daily car rides with restless
children.
Remember that Hawaii's 11.42% accommodations tax will be added to your
final bill. Parking is free unless otherwise noted. Also, if you're booking a stay at
an upscale hotel, be sure to ask if there is a “resort fee” ($10-$15 a day) tacked
onto your bill.
CENTRAL MAUI
If you're arriving late at night or you have an early morning flight out, the best
choice near Kahului Airport is the Maui Beach Hotel, 170 Kaahumanu Ave.
( & 888/649-3222 ). The nondescript, motel-like rooms go for $98 to $175 and
include free airport shuttle service. It's okay for a night, but not a place to spend
your vacation.
WEST MAUI
LAHAINA
In addition to the following choices, you may want to consider the oceanfront
condos at Lahaina Shores Beach Resort, 475 Front St. ( & 800/642-6284;
www.lahainashores.com). Studio and one-bedroom units go for $180 to $315.

Ohana Maui Islander This wooden complex's units, especially those
with kitchenettes, are one of Lahaina's great buys for families, especially the
larger ones. The property isn't on the beach, but on a quiet side street (a rarity
in Lahaina) and within walking distance of restaurants (there are no restaurants
on the property), shops, attractions, and, yes, the beach (just 3 blocks away). All
of the good-size rooms are comfortable and quiet. A family of four can fit into
the one-bedroom suite with complete kitchen; if you want more space, a two-
bedroom suite is also available. The entire complex is spread across 10 land-
scaped acres and includes a sun deck, a barbecue, a picnic area, small pools, and
plenty of washers and dryers. The aloha-friendly staff will take the time to
answer all of your questions, and kids get a beach ball at check-in. Tip: When
booking, ask about “SimpleSaver Rates”; you can save a bundle off the rack
rates.
