In-Depth Information
Mauna Lani Resort ( & 808/885-0950 ), resembles an art museum of unique
Hawaii art pieces.
NORTH KOHALA
You and your kids can make a day out of wandering in and out the tiny towns
of Hawi and Kapaau looking at the one-of-a-kind stores ranging from crafts and
fine arts ( Ackerman Gallery, Hawi; & 808/889-5971 ), to whimsical clothes
and accessories ( As Hawi Turns; & 808/889-5023 ), to jewelry and other crafts
( Elements, Kapaau; & 808/889-0760 ).
WAIMEA
Nestled in the rolling hills between the Kohala and Mauna Kea mountains is this
upcountry community of cowboys, retirees, and upscale yuppies. It has great
farmers' markets (see markets below), beautiful flowers, and terrific galleries.
Among my favorites are: Silk Road, Parker Square ( & 808/885-7474 ), where
you'll find the best Asian antiques outside of Tokyo; Bentley's Home and Gar-
den Collection, Parker Square ( & 808/885-5565 ), which would be Martha
Stewart's store if she lived in Hawaii; and Waimea General Store, Parker Square
( & 808/885-4479 ), where even your kids will be charmed by this old-fashioned
country store with everything from dolls to cookies.
HAMAKUA COAST
This one-lane country town actually has great shopping for everyone, from new
age merchandise ( Starseed; & 808/775-9344 ), to Hawaiian gifts and toys
( Taro Patch Gift; & 808/775-7228 ), to everything a treasure hunter could
desire (or, as Grace Walker, owner of Honokaa Trading Company [ & 808/
775-0808 ] puts it: “Rustic, tacky, rare—there's something for everyone”).
HILO
Shopping in Hilo is centered on Kaiko'o Hilo Mall, 777 Kilauea Ave., near the
state and county buildings; Prince Kuhio Shopping Plaza, 111 E. Puainako,
just off Highway 11 on the road north to Volcano, where you'll find a super-
market, drugstore, Macy's, and other standards; the Bayfront area downtown,
where the hippest new businesses have taken up residence in the historic build-
ings lining Kamehameha Avenue; and the new Waiakea Plaza, where the big-
box retailers (Ross, Office Max, Borders, Wal-Mart) have moved in. For
practical needs, there's a KTA Super Store at 323 Keawe St. and another at 50
E. Puainako St.
VOLCANO
Although there are not a lot of shopping opportunities in this quaint mountain
village, what's there is unsurpassed. Some of the best artists on the Big Island live
here and display their works at Volcano Art Center, in Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park ( & 808/967-8222 ), which also has lots of workshops, lectures,
and other activities; and at Kilauea Kreations, on Old Volcano Road ( & 808/
967-8090 ), a co-op of artists and crafters who make quilts, jewelry, feather leis,
ceramics, and other art forms. Don't miss the village's general store, Volcano
Store, Huanani and Old Volcano Highway ( & 808/967-7210 ), where you kids
will love the huge selection of flowers (they'll ship to the mainland), stone cook-
ies (as in hard-as-stone but delicious), taro chips (yummy), and local poha
(gooseberry) jam.
