THE KONA COAST
GUIDED WALKING TOURS Older kids (10 and up) or kids very interested
in history will be enthralled with the Kona Historical Society 's ( & 808/323-
2005; www.konahistorical.org) two historic walking tours. All walks must be
booked in advance; call for reservations and departure locations. The 75-minute
Historic Kailua Village Walking Tour is the most comprehensive tour of the
Kona coast. It takes you all around Kailua-Kona, from King Kamehameha's last
seat of government to the summer palace of the Hawaiian royal family and
beyond, with lots of Hawaiian history and colorful lore along the way. Tours
depart from the King Kamehameha Hotel lobby Monday through Friday at
9 and 11am. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 5 to 12. For reser-

The 1-hour Living History Tour takes you through the everyday life of a
Japanese family on the historic Uchida Coffee Farm during the 1900s. Younger
kids will love interacting with costumed interpreters as they enact life on a cof-
fee farm. The tour is offered Monday through Friday on the hour from 9am to
1pm, at a cost of $15 for adults and $7.50 for kids ages 5 to 12. Meet at the
Kona Historical Society office, 81-6551 Mamalahoa Hwy. (next to Kona Spe-

A SELF-GUIDED DRIVING TOUR A self-guided audio tour on CD, Big
Island Audio Tour ( & 808/879-8800; www.bigislandaudiotour.com), features
36 tracks of information on seeing the Big Island. Not only does it give direc-
tions to well-known sites, but it has tracks on various beaches, short hikes, and
side trips, as well as information on pronouncing Hawaiian words and on
Hawaiian history and culture. The cost is $17 plus $2 for shipping.
If you're interested in seeing how your morning cup of joe goes from beans to
brew, get a copy of the Coffee Country Driving Tour. This self-guided drive
will take you farm by farm through Kona's famous coffee country; it also features
a fascinating history of the area, the lowdown on coffeemaking lingo, some
insider tips on how to make a great cup, and even a recipe for Kona coffee
macadamia-nut chocolate-chunk pie (goes great with a cup of java). The free

Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center All ages. If you've checked in early for
your flight back home, walk the kids over to this small museum at the airport
to kill an hour. There's a real moon rock and memorabilia in honor of Big
Island-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who died in the 1986 Challenger space
shuttle disaster. Fun displays in the museum include a gravity well, which illus-
