WAIMEA
Cook's Discoveries Waimea Suite Not exactly a bed-and-
breakfast, this bottom-floor apartment in a large, two-story, 40-year-old gra-
cious upcountry home is more of an intimate hideaway. The two-bedroom,
1,100-square-foot unit has a huge full kitchen (with everything a gourmet cook
could want), a living room with fireplace, and an outdoor lanai surrounded by
giant trees. Breakfast fixings (from eggs, sausage, breads, fruit, and hot and cold
cereals to a half dozen different teas) are stocked in the kitchen when you arrive.
Your kids will love the oatmeal-coconut-macadamia nut cookies from the Cook's
Discoveries Store for a bedtime snack. Hostess Patti Cook is the owner and
inspiration behind Cook's Discoveries, one of the best boutique shops on the
island. (If you book this property directly, she gives you a $20 gift certificate to
her wonderful shop.) She has decorated this suite with her favorite antique and
island paraphernalia. For rainy days, she has games and cards to entertain the
kids. It's so cozy here, you'll find it hard to leave.

THE HAMAKUA COAST
You'll find the following hotels on the “North Kohala & Waimea” map on
p. 201.
The Cliff House Perched on the cliffs above the ocean is this
romantic two-bedroom getaway, surrounded by horse pastures and million-dol-
lar views. A large deck takes in that ocean vista, where whales frolic offshore in
winter. Impeccably decorated (the owner also owns Waipio Valley Artworks),
the unit features a full kitchen (stocked with everything you could possibly
want—even a salad spinner), two large bedrooms, and a full bathroom. Lots of
little touches make this property stand out from the others: an answering
machine for the phone, a pair of binoculars, a chess set, and even an umbrella
for the rain squalls. A family of four could comfortably share this unit.

HILO
You'll find the following accommodations on the “Hilo” map on p. 206.
Dolphin Bay Hotel This two-story motel-like building, 4 blocks
from downtown, is a clean, family-run property that offers good value in a quiet
garden setting. Ripe starfruit hang from the trees, flowers abound, and there's a
junglelike trail by a stream. The tidy concrete-block apartments are small and
often breezeless, but they're equipped with ceiling fans and jalousie windows. All
units have fully equipped kitchens, and are brightly painted and outfitted with
rattan furniture and Hawaiian prints. The one-bedroom apartments will easily
sleep four, with a queen bed in the bedroom and two twin beds in the living
room. (You can sleep more with a rollaway bed.) There are no phones in the
rooms, but there's one in the lobby. You're welcome to all the papayas and
bananas you can eat.
