Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
The first destination resort in Hawaii, built in
1965, this grande dame may have been eclipsed in architectural style and ameni-
ties by the newer resorts on the Kohala Coast, but the beach out front is divine,
and the landscaped grounds have a maturity seen nowhere else on this coast. The
rooms are huge by today's standards. The hotel is positioned to catch the cool-
ing trade winds, and the views from the large lanais are breathtaking.
As at its sister hotel, Hapuna Beach Prince (see above), the best deal for a fam-
ily is the Ohana Package, where the first room is rack rate and the second room
(actually up to five additional rooms) are half-price, plus there's a complimen-
tary daily breakfast for two adults. Also, during the summer (May 1-Sept 30),
kids ages 10 and under eat free. At check-in, kids get the same age-appropriate
treats as at the Hapuna Beach Prince. In addition, kids ages 5 to 12 can attend
the Keiki Club, filled with great activities (note that winter prices are double that
of summer prices, which are $13 for a half-day or $25 for a full day).
I do like this place but I have a few criticisms: After years, they finally put TVs
in every room, but the TVs are so tiny you need a pair of binoculars to watch
from bed; the staff did not display the usual aloha spirit during our last visit; and
access to ocean activities (such as scuba diving and sailing) was not from the
beautiful beach outside the hotel—instead, we were bused down the road to
another hotel. At these prices, I expect more.
