Haleiwa Joe's AMERICAN/SEAFOOD Your family will be happy at this
comfortable restaurant, located next to the Haleiwa bridge, with a great harbor
and sunset view. Haleiwa Joe's, a steak-and-seafood harborside restaurant with
indoor-outdoor seating and a surf-and-turf menu, serves up fresh local seafood
such as whole Hawaiian moi, opakapaka, ahi, and whatever comes in fresh that
day. The kids' menu includes favorites like chicken skewers with peanut sauce.
For lunch, they offer big sandwiches and crispy salads.
66-0011 Kamehameha Hwy., Haleiwa. & 808/637-8005. Kids' menu, highchairs, boosters, crayons. Reser-
vations not accepted. Main courses $13-$20; kids' menu $4.95-$6.95. V. Mon-Thurs 11:30am-9:30pm (lim-
ited menu 4:15-5:30pm); Fri-Sat 11:30am-10:30pm (limited menu 4:15-5:30pm; bar until midnight); Sun
11:30am-9:30pm (limited menu 3:45-5pm).
Jameson's by the Sea SEAFOOD Bring the kids to this roadside watering
hole across the street from the ocean for cocktails, sashimi, and its celebrated
salmon pâté, or for other hot and cold appetizers, salads, and sandwiches. The
kids will most likely order the cheeseburger off the keiki menu, but you'll be
tempted by the grilled crab-and-shrimp sandwich on sourdough bread or the
fresh-fish sandwich of the day, grilled plain and simple. Upstairs, the much
pricier dining room opens its doors 5 nights a week for the usual surf-and-turf
choices: fresh opakapaka, ulua (Hawaiian jack fish), and mahimahi; scallops in
lemon butter and capers; and lobster tail, New York steak, and filet mignon.
62-540 Kamehameha Hwy., Haleiwa. & 808/637-4336. Kids' menu, highchairs, boosters, crayons. Reser-
vations recommended. Main courses $13-$39 in upstairs dining room; downstairs lunch menu $7-$14; kids'
menu $4.95-$6.95. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Downstairs, daily 11am-5pm; pub menu Mon-Tues 5-9pm, Sat-Sun
11am-9pm. Upstairs, Wed-Sun 5-9pm.
INEXPENSIVE
Cafe Haleiwa BREAKFAST/LUNCH/MEXICAN Haleiwa's legendary
breakfast joint is a big hit with surfers, urban gentry with weekend country
homes, reclusive artists, and hungry families looking for breakfast or lunch. No
kids' menu, but it's not needed as they can pick the fruit pancakes for breakfast
and the grilled cheese for lunch. This is a wake-up-and-hit-the-beach kind of
place, serving generous omelets with names like “Off the Wall,” “Off the Lip,”
and “Breakfast in a Barrel.” Surf pictures line the walls, and the ambience is
Formica-style casual. And, for the grown-ups, what could be better than an
espresso to start the day?
66-460 Kamehameha Hwy., Haleiwa. & 808/637-5516. Highchairs. Reservations not accepted. Main
courses $6-$11. AE, MC, V. Sun-Fri 7am-2pm; Sat 7am-12:30pm.
Cholos Homestyle Mexican II MEXICAN If you love Mexican food,
it's worth the wait at this popular North Shore eatery, where excellent spinach
quesadillas and a roasted-veggie combination plate are presented with so-so serv-
ice. Still, this is the unhurried North Shore, and the biggest rush for most folks
is getting to and from the beach. Kids will love the fish taco plate, a steal at
$6.75 (just $4 a la carte). I recommend sitting at the tables outdoors; indoors,
it's dark and cavelike, with loud music.
North Shore Marketplace, 66-250 Kamehameha Hwy. & 808/637-3059. Highchairs, boosters. Combination
plates $5.25-$9.25. No credit cards. Daily 8am-9pm; breakfast served until 11am.

Kua Aina AMERICAN “What's the name of that sandwich shop on
the North Shore?” I hear that often. Although this North Shore staple has
expanded to the Ward Centre area in Kakaako, you'd never know it by the lines
