C & C Pasta ITALIAN Once primarily a takeout place (the deli case
is still here), and now Honolulu's best Italian eatery (still with great sauces and
homemade pasta to go), this tiny neighborhood gem really sizzles. Dress casu-
ally for this neighborhood eatery, but be sure to make a reservation because
there's always a line for dinner. Oenophiles gather regularly to uncork their best
bottles of red, while an eclectic crowd of pasta lovers tucks into toe-tingling
feasts: a sublime mushroom risotto with truffle butter, excellent bruschetta and
raviolis, and my perpetual favorites, linguine with clams and spaghetti put-
tanesca. Other excellent choices include the lasagna (meat and vegetarian) or
penne with roasted eggplant. If that's not enough, try one of the specials on the
blackboard, like the linguine. Owner Carla Magziar recently added pizza to the
menu (with garlic, Gorgonzola, and other such tasty toppings) and a heroic
salad of mixed greens, Gorgonzola, hazelnuts, and roasted onions and peppers,
with fig balsamic dressing. The quality is tops at C & C, the atmosphere is
casual, and even the pickiest palates should find something to rave about.
There's no kids' menu, but smaller portions are available for the bambini. Tip:
If the bread pudding or tiramisu are on the menu, they're a must-have. And if
you're in a rush, there's always a pot of puttanesca sauce simmering, and it's great
to go. Although service can lag when it's busy, the food is hard to beat.

Genki Sushi SUSHI If your kids like sushi, this is one of the most inex-
pensive places to go. Take your place in line for a seat at one of the U-shaped
counters. Conveyor belts parade by with freshly made sushi, usually two pieces
per color-coded plate, priced inexpensively. The possibilities are dizzying: spicy
tuna topped with scallions, ahi, scallops with mayonnaise, Canadian roll (like
California roll, except with salmon), sea urchin, flavored octopus, sweet shrimp,
surf clam, corn, tuna salad, and so on. Genki starts with a Japanese culinary tra-
dition and takes liberties with it, so don't be a purist. By the end of the meal, the
piled-high plates are tallied up by color, and presto, your bill appears. Combi-
nation platters are available for takeout.
900 Kapahulu Ave. & 808/735-8889. Highchairs, boosters. A la carte sushi from $1.20 for 2 pieces; combi-
nation platters $7-$39. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Daily 11am-3pm; Sun-Thurs 5-9pm; Fri-Sat 5-10pm; takeout
available daily 11am-9pm.

Cafe Laufer BAKERY/SANDWICH SHOP This small, cheerful cafe fea-
tures frilly decor and sublime pastries—from apple scones and linzer tortes to
fruit flan, decadent chocolate mousse, and carrot cake—to accompany the lattes
and espressos. Fans drop in for simple soups and deli sandwiches on fresh-baked
breads; biscotti during coffee break; or a hearty loaf of seven-grain, rye, pumper-
nickel, or French. The place is a solid hit for lunch; the small but satisfying
menu includes soup-salad-sandwich specials for a song, a fabulous spinach salad
with dried cranberries and Gorgonzola, and gourmet greens with mango-
infused, honey-mustard dressing. The orange-seared shrimp salad and the Chi-
nese chicken salad are great for the light eater, and the smoked Atlantic salmon
with fresh pumpernickel bread and cream cheese, Maui onions, and capers is
