Angelo Pietro PIZZA/SPAGHETTI Two motifs go over well here: the cre-
ate-your-own pasta and the quirky take on Italian food that could come only
from Japan. At this Italian-Japanese pasta house, you can order raw potato salad
with any of four dressings—shoyu, ginger, ume (plum), and sesame-miso—and
chase it with more than four dozen spaghetti choices, with sauces and toppings
ranging from several types each of mushroom, shrimp, chicken, spinach, and
sausage to squid ink and eggplant. There's no kids' menu (most of them are
happy with the regular menu), but they do offer a kids' meal of pizza or ragu
Bolognese. Garlic lovers adore the crisp garlic chips that are heaped atop some
of the selections.

Dixie Grill AMERICAN Popcorn, video games, a TV bar, and a lusty, noisy
atmosphere—that's Dixie Grill, the busiest (and perhaps noisiest) spot on Ward
Avenue. You can't miss it—just look for the fire-engine red walls and turquoise
painted fence. You can sit outside at wooden tables (with a view of Sports
Authority), or indoors in a high-decibel, quirky atmosphere much loved by fam-
ilies with kids. The all-American menu features barbecued ribs, burgers, shrimp,
salads, sandwiches, and a “mess o' crabs.” The star of the bargain-priced kids'
menu is the finger-lickin' barbecued chicken.

Country Cafe INTERNATIONAL Give yourself time to peruse the
lengthy list of specials posted on the menu board, as well as the prodigious
printed menu. Stand in line at the counter, place your order and pay, find a
Formica-topped table, and wait for your order to appear on a plate heaped with
salad and other accompaniments. The mind-boggling selection includes nine
types of cheese steaks (including vegetarian tofu), Cajun meatloaf, Thai curries,
various stir-fries, shoyu chicken, vegetarian or eggplant lasagna, chicken Dijon,
Cajun-style ahi, and other choices spanning many cultures and tastes. Surely
there is something here for everyone in the family. Take a good look at the din-
ers, and you'll see that the menu appeals equally to bodybuilders and hedonists.

Kaka'ako Kitchen GOURMET PLATE LUNCHES This is an
excellent place for families; it's owned by Chef Russell Siu, of 3660 Onn the Rise
(p. 106). You'll get excellent home-style cooking served on Styrofoam plates in a
warehouse ambience at budget prices. The menu, which changes every 3 to 4
months, includes a keiki menu, where the chicken nuggets are the most popular
dish. For adults, you can choose from seared ahi sandwich with tobiko (flying-fish
roe) aioli; the signature charbroiled ahi steak; sandwiches; beef stew; five-spice
shoyu chicken; the very popular meatloaf; and other multi-ethnic entrees.
