The Business of Travel and Tourism
Introduction
This assignment is made up of a number of tasks which, when successfully completed, are designed to give
you suffi cient evidence to meet the Pass (P), Merit (M) an d Distinction (D) grading criteria for the unit. If you
have carried out the activities and read the case studies in this unit, you will already have done a lot of work
towards completing the tasks for this assignment.
Scenario
You've been lucky to get a placement job with Jenny Walters, t he Tourism Development Manager for
Worsetshire County Council. Worsetshire has just received an Obje c tive One grant from the EU amounting
to 1.8 million Euros for tourism projects in this coastal county. The money is to be used to help tourism
businesses in Worsetshire improve the quality of their facilities and ser v ices for visitors. Tourism is seen by
the Council as one of the key ways of encouraging economic, social and cultural development.
Part of the grant money is to be used for supporting new start-up tourism b u s inesses. Jenny is in charge of
this project and wants you to help her with some of the project tasks. The fi rst part of your job is to gather
together some information and write two business start-up fact sheets, coverin g :
1.
The travel and tourism business environment;
2.
The characteristics of travel and tourism organisations, and gaining competitive a dvantage in travel and
