The growing links between food and
tourism
Food and drink play an important role in a tourist's
holiday experience - eating pasta while in Italy, paella
in Spain or drinking whisky in Scotland or freshly-
squeezed orange juice in Florida are examples of the
important links between food and tourism. Countries
and regions increasingly use images of food and drink
to promote their destinations to visitors, as well as
encouraging tourist businesses to offer local produce
to their guests. Britain, for example, has a growing
number of food festivals and farmers' markets that
are not only popular with local people, but also with
domestic and incoming tourists, who appreciate the
chance to sample local cuisine.
The growth of the long-haul short
break market
The new Airbus 380 'super jumbo'
Earlier in this unit we discussed the rapid growth of short
breaks to European destinations. The last few years
has seen a development of the short break concept to
destinations much further afi eld. According to British
Airways, the typical long-haul short break tourist is in
their 20s or 30s without children or couples over the
age of 45 whose children have left home. Destinations
that are part of this growing trend include Dubai, Rio
de Janeiro, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Cape Town,
Singapore and Buenos Aires.
FOCUS ON INDUSTRY
THE LUDLOW FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL
The town of Ludlow in Shropshire was one of the fi rst
places in Britain to stage a food and drink festival back
in 1995. The original twin aims of the festival were to
promote the area's small food and drink producers,
and encourage visitors to explore the town's shops,
restaurants and pubs, thereby encouraging tourism
and contributing to the local economy. The festival
has grown into the UK's foremost event of its kind
and visitor numbers have grown steadily since the
fi rst festival, reaching an all-time record in 2006 when
17,100 people entered Ludlow Castle during the
three days. The magic 20,000 fi gure was reached in
2007. The festival is organised and operated almost
entirely by volunteers, with any surplus funds being
re-invested into the following year's event.
Cruising refl ects changes in family
composition
Ocean Village has refurbished the latest addition its
fl eet, Ocean Village Two, to cater for changes in the
family unit, which show a shift towards the single parent
family. The cruise company has introduced specially
designed 3-berth cabins on board Ocean Village
Two to meet demand from the single parent family
sector where a single parent is taking two children
on holiday. The company has identifi ed a signifi cant
increase in single parents travelling with two children
