Destinations play a crucial role in travel and tourism,
as the 'umbrella' under which the many component
industries of the travel and tourism sector operate.
The general growth in world travel over the last 50
years has introduced tourists to many new destinations
at a growing pace. Long-haul travel is becoming
commonplace as aircraft fl ight distances grow, tourists'
appetites for new experiences increase and prices of
air tickets fall.

Affordability
- the British consumer is always looking
for a bargain, e.g. travelling to non-Eurozone
countries where their money may go further ;

Weather
- a warm climate features heavily on many
wish lists;

The X factor
- may win out over all the above, e.g. a
beach in Thailand visited by Leonardo de Caprio!
Hot destinations for 2010 in the ABTA report include
Dubai, Germany, Morocco, Canada and South Africa.
Demand for destinations fl uctuates all the time in
response to a variety of factors. ABTA's Travel Trends
2010 report suggests that, for a destination to become
'hot' and attract more visitors, it must score highly on
the following six points:
