Lifestyle changes
spoiling what the visitors have come to see and enjoy.
These problems have led to calls for cars to be banned
from some areas or their use strictly controlled. The
Congestion Charge is now fi rmly established in London,
while popular tourist cities, including Canterbury,
Cambridge and York, have introduced measures such
as 'park and ride' schemes, cycle hire and parking
restrictions to help alleviate their traffi c problems.
Managers in many of our National Parks, including the
Brecon Beacons and the Peak District, encourage the
use of public transport by working in partnership with
local bus and train operators.
British lifestyles have changed dramatically in the last
50 years. We now have a wide range of time-saving
household goods such as dishwashers, washing
machines, microwave ovens, DIY goods and garden
machinery. Most people enjoy a comfortable living
with a reasonable income and suffi cient leisure time
to enjoy holidays, short breaks and day trips. We have
also seen many population changes in the UK, known
as 'demographics', and changes in family composition.
These include the general ageing of the population with
people living longer, more lone-parent households,
fewer couples choosing to marry, higher divorce rates
and women delaying motherhood or choosing not to
have children at all. All of these factors have an impact
on the travel and tourism sector and the products made
available to travellers.
Working patterns
Changing working patterns since the 1960s have
altered that way that people use their leisure time.
The traditional 2-week holiday, although still popular
with many people, is gradually being eroded in favour
of shorter periods of leisure time. The UK has seen
an increase in part-time and contract working, while
technological developments such as laptops and
mobile 'phones have allowed people to work from
home much more than in the past.
Activity 1.12
Using Figures 1.13 and 1.14 for reference, write
a newspaper article that summarises the key
developments (from the 1960s onwards) that have
shaped the present day travel and tourism sector.
Your headline is 'Fifty Years of Tourism Growth'. You
should expand on the points listed in the Figures
and carry out some research of your own to add to
these facts. Your article should be no more than 750
words long.
Cycle hire schemes can help ease congestion
High-speed trains
Many countries in Europe have seen their high-speed
rail networks develop rapidly in recent years, notably
France with its TGV services. Britain benefi ts from
the fast Eurostar services between London and the
continent, using the High Speed One rail link between
London and the UK side of the Channel Tunnel.
This activity is designed to provide evidence for P4.
