Customers - to supply products and services in a
safe, secure and effi cient manner;
The travel and tourism sector is ultimately in existence to
provide holidays and other travel services and products.
For most companies this means dealing with the public,
but may also involve working with other members of
the 'travel trade', e.g. a tour operator or coach operator
may rely on travel agencies to sell its holidays. Earlier
in this unit we saw how the different travel and tourism
component industries - accommodation, transport,
attractions, tour operations, travel agents, tourism
development and promotion, trade associations and
regulatory bodies, and ancillary services - provide a vast
range of products and services, from package holidays
and scheduled fl ights to business travel products and
services to promote tourism to and within the UK.

Shareholders - people who have invested in the
business in the hope of a fi nancial return;

Members - membership organisations, such as the
YHA, National Trust and English Heritage, have a
duty to look after their members at all times;
4.
Local communities - organisations must reduce their
impacts on their neighbours and host communities,
e.g. airports and tour operators;
5.
The industry - trade associations try to ensure
that all members of the travel and tourism sector
operate in a professional manner;
6.
Other organisations - including H M Revenue and
Customs, the Competition Commission, Health
and Safety Executive, local authorities, etc.
Responsibilities to stakeholders
Organisations involved in travel and tourism vary in
size from large, multinational corporations to small,
independent operators. Regardless of their size, all
travel and tourism organisations have responsibilities to
a range of 'stakeholders', i.e. anybody with an interest
in the organisation. These include:
