Be able to prepare for a work
experience placement in the travel
and tourism sector
SECTION 1
Icebreaker
This unit is all about preparing for, and completing, a successf u l p e riod of work experience in the travel and tourism
sector. Working by yourself, or in small groups under t he direction of your tutor, see how you get on with the
following tasks to help you make a start on this unit:
Make a note of which component indust r y o f the travel and tourism sector, e.g. travel agencies, airlines, tour
operations, tourist information centres , etc., appeals to you most for a period of work experience and give the
reasons why;
Make a list of three specifi c t ravel and tourism organisations where you would like to work on placement, giving
your reasons for choosin g each one;
Think of what you w o uld like to get out of a period of work experience;
What do you t h ink the placement employer would expect of you on work experience?
List the sk il ls that you would you like to develop on your work placement;
What do you think is the best way to approach employers to ask for a work placement?
L ist some types of evidence that you could use to evaluate your work experience placement.
When you've fi nished, show your answers to your tutor and compare your answers with what other groups in your
class have written.
Having the opportunity to gain some experience of
working in the travel and tourism sector as part of your
course is a real bonus. Even short placements of just
a few weeks can set a person on a rewarding career
path for the future. A placement can be invaluable in
helping you decide what career path you want to follow
(and even one that you don't!).
Give you a chance to put academic theory into
practice;
Bridge the gap between college and the world of
work;
Make you stand out from the crowd;
Get a reference from your placement employer;
If approached in a logical and positive manner, your
placement has the potential to:
Build your confi dence by working with others and
perhaps dealing with the public;
Help you get a better job when you fi nish studying;
Help test out career options;
Develop skills that employers are looking for;
Learn more about yourself as a person.
