Work Experience in the
Travel and Tourism Sector
INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIT
This unit has a very practical outcome - a chance for you to gain some experience of working in the travel
and tourism s e c t or. It gives you the opportunity of putting some of the theory that you have been studying
on your course i n to practice in the workplace. You will be expected to spend a minimum of 60 hours on
work experience - this could be in a block, at weekends, on day-release from college, in evenings or during
a vacation.
In this unit you will investigate the many opportunities that exist for work experience, using a variety of
information sources. Yo u will set objectives for your placement and demonstrate the skills, qualities and
behaviour needed to complete an effective period of work experience. As part of your work experience,
you will investigate key feat u res of the placement organisation, such as ownership, activities and structure.
Finally, you will evaluate your own work experience placement using a range of supporting evidence.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
When you have completed this unit y o u should:

Be able to prepare for a work experien ce placement in the travel and tourism sector;
2.
Be able to demonstrate the skills, qualities and behaviours needed for effective performance in the
workplace;
3.
Know the key features of the chosen work ex pe rience organisation;
4.
Be able to evaluate your own work experience placement.

ASSESSMENT FOR THIS UNIT
This unit is internally assessed, meaning that you will be given an assignment (or series of assignments) to
complete by your tutor(s) to show that you have fully understood the content of t h e unit. A grading scale of
pass, merit or distinction is used when staff mark your assignment(s), with higher grades awarded to students
who show greater depth in analysis, evaluation and justifi cation in their assignments. An assignment for this
