Task 3
Jim wants has as k ed you to prepare a short report on how responsible tourism is managed in tourist
destinations. Your report should:
a.
Examine strategies used to manage responsible tourism in destinations (P3). This must focus on how
positive impacts are maximis e d and negative impacts minimised. You must include examples from towns
and cities, countryside and c o astal destinations in both MEDW and LEDW countries. Your report must
include real examples of at least one destination for each strategy identifi ed. These could be the same
destinations you chose for Task 1 o r different destinations altogether.
b.
Assess the effectiveness of strategies us e d to manage responsible tourism in a selected destination of your
choice (M2). You must make judgements on both the benefi ts and limitations of the strategies in place.
c.
Suggest improvements to the strategies us ed to manage responsible tourism in the destination you
selected for Task 3b (D2). Your suggestions must be valid and reasonable, citing good practice from
elsewhere to illustrate your points.
This task is designed to provide evidence for P3, M2 an d D2.
Task 4
Jim needs a good example of a 'responsible tourism holiday' to i nclude in a report that he is writing and has
asked you to carry out some research to:
a.
Plan a holiday incorporating principles of responsible tourism to m e et the following brief (P4).
Jenny and Sam Porter are very keen environmentalists looking for a 14- n ight holiday in an African country.
They are fed up with holidays where you just lie on the beach and woul d like to include the following in
their trip:
1. Staying in traditional lodge accommodation in a rural area;
2. Meeting people from local communities and learning about their way of lif e;
3. Visiting a game reserve that is concerned with wildlife conservation;
4. Finding out how traditional arts and crafts are made.
They would prefer not to have to fl y to Africa, but realise that a fl ight from one of the London airports
near to their home is the only practical option. They have a budget of £3,000 each for their 'once in a
lifetime' holiday.
You must provide full details of the planned holiday, including transport and travel details, a c commodation,
attractions and activities. You must state how the planned arrangements meet Jenny and Sam's needs in
terms of their motivations, preferences, time limit and budget.
b.
You must also justify the extent to which the planned holiday meets specifi c principles of responsibl e tourism
(M3). For example, you should consider the components of the holiday and justify the extent t o which
negative impacts are minimised and economic benefi ts are created. Also, the degree to which conserv a tion
of the natural and cultural heritage, and respect between visitors and the host community, are promote d .
