FOCUS ON INDUSTRY
THE TRAVEL FOUNDATION IN TOBAGO
The Travel Foundation (see case study on page 376)
is working with local people in Tobago to develop a
number of projects relating to tourism development.
Three projects are already underway:
1.
A video which explains sustainability issues to
visitors arriving at the airport;
2.
Reef demarcation buoys that are used to prevent
Tourism can help to conserve endangered wildlife
damage caused by boats anchoring on the coral
reefs;
Promoting cultural understanding and maintaining
cultural traditions must be a prime objective of all
tourism development projects. Communities can
benefi t from well-planned tourism through the
development of new community facilities that may
be fi nanced from tourism revenues. These may be
tourism-related and non-tourism-related facilities, e.g.
a new museum and a new village hall. By making use of
such facilities, local communities' quality of life can be
signifi cantly improved. Tourism also has the ability to
promote cultural understanding between people from
different nations with diverse traditions and religious
beliefs.
3.
Turtle awareness - hotel guests and staff are
being educated about turtle nesting on hotel
beaches.
A medium-term plan is being developed to look
at further projects on the island based on research
into the economic impact of all-inclusive hotels on
Tobago commissioned by the Travel Foundation.
