Responsible Tourism
INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIT
Travel and to u rism is developing rapidly throughout the world. It is seen as an excellent way of creating
jobs, generati n g revenue and helping economic development in destinations from Bradford to Bali, Cardiff
to Cancun and Keswick to Kenya. Tourism development has huge potential to help countries in the less
economically dev e loped world (LEDW), but it must be managed in a responsible way that is respectful of
local people, their c u ltures and the environment if it is to be truly sustainable in the long term.
This unit gives you the opportunity to learn more about why and how responsible tourism development takes
place at local, national a n d international levels. You will learn about the impacts of tourism development and
examine the roles of the ' agents' involved in developing tourism, i.e. all the individuals and organisations
that have an interest in touri s m development. You will also investigate a range of strategies used to manage
responsible tourism in destin a tions, such as traffi c management and developing community projects. Finally,
you will learn how to plan a h o liday that incorporates the principles of responsible tourism development.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
When you have completed this unit you should:

Know positive and negative impacts o f tourism on destinations;
2.
Understand roles and objectives of agents o f tourism development;
3.
Understand strategies used to manage resp o nsible tourism in destinations;
4.
Be able to plan holidays incorporating principle s of responsible tourism.

pass, merit or distinction is used when staff mark your assignment(s), with higher grades awarded to students
