ABTA - The Travel Association
Introduction
Founded in 1950, ABTA - The Travel Association is the UK's premier trade association for travel agents and
tour operators, representing more than 5,000 travel agencies and over 900 tour operators. ABTA members
sell over 90 per cent of all package holidays sold in t h e UK and a large proportion of independent travel
arrangements. They have a combined turnover in excess of £23 billion.
ABTA's aims
ABTA's main aims are to maintain the high standards of service a mong its members, as well as creating as
favourable a business climate as possible for the sector. Specifi c o b jectives of the Association are to:
1.
Promote the interests of all members in their relationships with ea ch o ther and with other branches of the
international travel sector, such as airlines, shipping companies, railways, coach companies and hotels;
2.
Maintain a code of conduct governing the activities of tour operators a n d travel agents for the benefi t
of members and the travelling public;
3.
Maintain liaison with governments and organisations concerned with the development of travel and
tourism both in the UK and abroad.
