SPACE CENTER VISITOR COMPLEX, FLORIDA

Built in 1967 as a way for NASA astronauts'
and employees' families to view space center
operations, today the Kennedy Space Center Visitor
Complex is one of Central Florida's most popular
tourist destinations. Located due east of Orlando,
the complex welcomes 1.5 million visitors from all
over the world every year and is the home of the
Space Shuttle launches. The 70-acre facility offers
visitors larger-than-life IMAX fi lms, live shows,
hands-on activities and behind-the-scenes tours.
Guided tours of the attraction include a narrated
and video-supplemented bus tour to view the Space
Shuttle launch pads and vehicle assembly building,
where the Shuttle is stacked for launch and where
Apollo and Saturn V rockets were once assembled.
The complex also has a children's play dome with a
scale model of a Space Shuttle and gym equipment.
The NASA Art Gallery has more than 200 pieces of
space-related works of art in a range of artistic styles
by world-renowned artists, including Andy Warhol
and Apollo astronaut Alan Bean. The attraction also
has a state-of-the-art conference facility overlooking
the Rocket Garden, providing event and meeting
space for corporate and conference groups. The
visitor complex also houses the largest retail store
in the world devoted to space themes with more
than 4,000 items for sale.
The natural world - exotic plants, rare animals and
impressive landscapes are prime motivators for long-
haul travel, e.g. wildlife safaris in Africa, trekking in
the Himalayas and whale watching in Alaska.
Other motivations - e.g. media infl uences, image,
shopping, health tourism, volunteering, education,
sport and VFR (visiting friends and relatives).
