DESTINATION FOCUS
CITY DESTINATION - LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles is the principal gateway to southern
California and has the second highest population
of any city in the USA (after New York). It sprawls
along the Pacifi c coast of California, with a coastline
stretching for 122km (76 miles) from Malibu to Long
Beach, while inland the city spreads out to fi ll a
vast, fl at and once arid basin ringed by the Santa
Monica and San Gabriel mountains. It is best-known
for the Hollywood fi lm studios, exclusive Beverly
Hills community and the original Disneyland theme
park in Anaheim, some 25 miles south-east of Los
Angeles centre. The city also has a number of
excellent swimming and surfi ng beaches, including
Laguna Beach, Long Beach, Malibu Beach and
Redondo Beach. Los Angeles is also home to many
world-renowned cultural institutions, such as the
Museum of Contemporary Art, the LA Philharmonic
Orchestra, the Getty Museum and the Getty Villa.
Visitors also come to experience the night life on
Sunset Strip, the beach life, the car culture and just
to 'people watch'.
Australia's Gold Coast
Popular long-haul purpose-built
destinations
Built destinations include those that are specifi cally
designed to attract tourists, such as theme parks
and gambling resorts, and those that have another
function yet are visited by tourists, e.g. cathedrals
and historic monuments. Many of the world's most
important built attractions have been granted World
Heritage Site status to protect their surroundings for
future generations. Some of the world's most popular
built attractions with UK travellers include Walt Disney
World Resort Florida, Disneyland California, Universal
Studios Orlando, Sea World Florida, Universal Studios
Hollywood, The Great Wall of China, Sydney Harbour
Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
