Every year thousands of people from across the world
visit festivals and events throughout Europe. These
include music, dance and theatre festivals, rock, pop
and jazz, literature, fi lm and philosophy festivals,
children's and street arts festivals, new media and even
virtual festivals.
Many people are drawn to European destinations
because of the culture and history found there and
to learn more about the lifestyles of the local people.
Thousands of years of civilisation have left Europe with
a wealth of cultural treasures. One of the most popular
historic monuments in Europe is the Roman town of
Pompeii in southern Italy, which was buried when
Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. The buildings in
Pompeii are very well preserved, including the Forum,
the gladiators' barracks and many fi ne houses. The
Louvre in Paris is one of Europe's fi nest art galleries,
housing the world-famous painting the Mona Lisa and
the Venus de Milo statue. Europe has many attractions
that have been granted World Heritage Site status
in recognition of their global, cultural signifi cance,
including Vatican City, the Historic Centre of Salzburg,
Old City of Dubrovnik, Mont-Saint-Michel, Venice
