Activity 7.3
Schengen countries
On the map of Europe that you have used to mark
the 27 Member States of the European Union, plus
the three candidate countries, mark the 19 countries
listed above to give you a full picture of all the
countries of continental Europe.
Schengen countries are European countries that have
agreed to abolish their border controls and adopt a
common visa policy. The most noticeable impact of
the Schengen Agreement on individuals is that they
no longer have to show their passports when crossing
borders between Schengen Member States. Today,
22 EU Member States - Austria, Belgium, the Czech
Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany,
Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg,
Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Spain, Sweden - plus Norway, Iceland and
Switzerland fully implement the Schengen Agreement.
This activity is designed to provide evidence for P1.
European gateways
Gateways are the entry points for travellers to a country,
e.g. airports, ports, border crossings, railway stations
and tunnels. Air travel is by far the most common
method of travelling from the UK to destinations in
Europe, accounting for more than three-quarters of all
trips, thereby making air gateways an important part
of the European travel and tourism sector. Figure 7.2
shows the key European air gateways for travellers
from the UK to continental Europe. Travelling by sea
from UK ports is also important, particularly for people
travelling to countries that are close to the UK, such as
France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The principal UK
ports are shown on the map in Unit 3 on page 97, as
well as the location of the Channel Tunnel, which offers
car and rail services for UK travellers visiting Europe.
Activity 7.2
On the map of Europe that you have used to mark
the 27 Member States of the European Union, plus
the three candidate countries, use an appropriate
key to indicate those countries which are part of the
Eurozone and the 22 EU countries that have signed
up to the Schengen Agreement.
This activity is designed to provide evidence for P1.
Activity 7.4
Other European countries
We saw previously that there are currently 27 Member
States of the European Union and three candidate
countries - Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia and Turkey. In addition, there are a
further 19 countries that make up the 49 countries
of continental Europe - Albania, Andorra, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia,
Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro,
Norway, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland,
Ukraine, Vatican City State.
Mark the key air gateways (with their 3-letter codes)
shown in Figure 7.2 on an outline map of Europe
(which registered tandtonline users can download
from www.tandtonline.co.uk). On the same map,
mark the key port gateways in European countries
that have ferry services from UK ports, e.g. key ports
in France, Spain, Germany, etc. You will need to carry
out some research to complete this task and refer
to the map in Unit 3 on page 97 for a list of the UK
ports. Also, mark the location of the Channel Tunnel
and the Eurostar terminals in continental Europe on
your map.
This activity is designed to provide evidence for P1.
