INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIT
Europe is the world's most popular region for international tourism, boasting seven of the ten most popular
tourist countri e s in the world. The market for travel and tourism in Europe is changing rapidly - the ageing
of the populatio n , greater consumer demand for new experiences in travel, developments in technology
and competition f rom other regions around the world, are all changing the face of the European travel and
tourism sector.
In this unit you will learn about the location of countries, gateways and key tourist destinations in Europe,
completing a series of tasks to test your travel geography. You will investigate the factors that determine the
appeal of European tr a vel destinations, including accessibility, attractions and cultural aspects. You will also
learn how to segment the European travel market by leisure experience, such as summer sun, winter sun and
winter sports. Finally, you will explore the factors that affect the future development of the European travel
market, learning about developing and declining destinations, as well as the effects of issues such as the
growth of low-cost airlines and short breaks.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
