In-Depth Information
Training
matters. Some travel and tourism organisations run
a 'buddies' scheme, which is a more informal type of
mentoring where new staff team up with somebody
doing a similar job in the same organisation.
Staff training and development has a very important
role to play in creating and maintaining an effective
workplace. As we discussed earlier in this unit, training
can take place at work (on-the-job training) or at a
college or other training establishment (off-the-job
training). Some large travel and tourism organisations
run their own in-house training events, which are
tailored to the needs of the company. Training can help
staff achieve some of the motivational factors identifi ed
by Herzberg and discussed earlier in this unit, such as
achievement, recognition, advancement and personal
development.
FOCUS ON INDUSTRY
TRAINING AT CENTER PARCS
As a fi rst step, new staff attend an induction training
event, where they are given the opportunity to
spend a day on a Center Parcs' Village to experience
the facilities as a guest. This is designed to be fun as
well as helping new staff to become knowledgeable
about the different aspects of the resort and the
needs of guests.
Center Parcs has an active career development
scheme called the 'Manager in Training' programme,
which provides clear routes for career progression.
Applications for the programme are invited
annually and successful applicants go forward to an
assessment day where their potential and suitability
for development are evaluated. As part of the
development programme, successful individuals
attend a variety of courses in addition to on-the-job
training.

Staf at National Express benei t from training
Earlier in this unit we saw that induction training,
when new members of staff learn more about an
organisation and familiarise themselves with their new
environment, helps staff settle easily into their new jobs
and to establish good working relationships with work
colleagues. As such, induction has an important role to
play in staff motivation and making them feel part of an
effective workplace from the outset.
Investors in People
Investors in People (IIP) is the national quality standard
in the UK for effective investment in the training and
development of people to achieve organisational
objectives. Organisations, large and small, in all
sectors of the economy, have achieved the standard
or are working towards Investors in People. The
standard provides a framework for improving business
performance and competitiveness, through a planned
approach to setting and communicating objectives
and developing people to meet these goals. In other
words, what people can do and are motivated to do in
Mentoring is when an experienced member of an
organisation offers support and guidance to a more
junior employee who is new to his or her job. The mentor
can advise on such matters as career development,
training opportunities and a range of work-related
