Know the stages of recruitment and
selection in travel and tourism
SECTION 2
Good employees are the backbone of any organisation
in the service sector, and particularly in travel and
tourism where they play such an important part of the
experience that the customers are buying. But how
can an organisation be sure of getting the best people
for the job? A systematic approach to recruitment
and selection, paying attention to detail and allowing
enough time to see the process through to its
completion, will pay dividends to the org a nis a tion,
and in particular will go a long way towar d s r e ducing
the high levels of staff turnover that are f o und in some
sectors of travel and tourism.

Stage 5
The recruitment and selection process is shown in
Figure 6.2. Once an organisation has identifi ed the
need for a new member of staff, the chart shows that
the recruitment and selection process consists of eight
inter-related stages, which we look at in more detail in
the following sections of this unit.
Shortlisting
Stage 6
Interviews and testing
Identifying company needs
Stage 7
Whenever a vacancy arises, whether it is to replace a
member of staff who is leaving or to fi ll a new post, it is
a good time for an organisation to identify its staffi ng
needs. It does this by carrying out a thorough analysis of
what the job entails. If it is an existing post to be fi lled,
simply fi nding a set of old job details and reproducing
them without considering if they are still relevant, is not
good enough. Information to be included in the job
analysis can be obtained from the existing postholder,
previous records, other members of staff, competitor
organisations and by direct observation of members
of staff.
