Accommodation
The accommodation industry is an important
component of UK travel and tourism. It includes all
types of accommodation that people use for leisure or
business tourism and visiting friends and relatives, such
as hotels, guesthouses, self-catering cottages and inns.
Data from the United Kingdom Tourism Survey (UKTS)
shows that spending on accommodation by British
people within the UK in 2008 was more than £21 billion,
making accommodation the single largest component
of tourist spending. The accommodation industry is
also a signifi cant employer in the UK, providing more
than 1.5 million jobs in hotels, pubs, restaurants, etc.
Figure 1.5 gives some examples of the importance of
employment in this industry for individual companies.
The accommodation industry in the UK is dominated
by commercial enterprises, providing a wide range of
hotels, guesthouses and self-catering accommodation.
The main non-commercial suppliers of accommodation
are the Youth Hostels Association (YHA), universities
and colleges, and premises operated by religious
groups.
