industries
working in tourism, which together make up the travel
and tourism sector as shown in Figure 1.4.
As you can see from Figure 1.4, travel and tourism is a
complicated business! The focus of all activity in travel
and tourism is satisfying the needs of tourists, whether
they are domestic, inbound or outbound. The core
components of the sector - accommodation, transport,
attractions, tour operations, travel agents, tourism
development and promotion, trade associations and
regulatory bodies, and ancillary services - are supplied
by a mixture of private, voluntary and public sector
providers, ranging from multi-million pound companies
such as TUI Travel, Hilton Hotels and British Airways,
to small businesses and local councils which provide
tourist facilities and tourist information for visitors. Tour
operators put together holidays and short breaks, which
are sold through travel agents and other distribution
channels such as the internet. Trade associations, e.g.
ABTA, are found in all parts of the travel and tourism
sector, helping businesses to achieve their aims.
Regulatory bodies exist to make sure that tourists get
a fair deal in travel and are transported safely and
securely to their destinations.
