Gardens and parks give visitors the chance to unwind
and enjoy Britain's natural beauty. Organisations such
as the National Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society
(RHS) and National Gardens Scheme, offer inbound
and domestic tourists the chance to explore some of
the fi nest gardens to be found anywhere in the world,
e.g. Powys Castle Gardens, the RHS at Wisley and
Stourhead.

Edinburgh Castle is very popular with UK and overseas tourists
Heritage Open Days celebrate England's
architecture and culture by offering free access to
properties that are usually closed to the public or
normally charge for admission. Every year on four
days in September, buildings of every age, style and
function open their doors to the public, ranging from
castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish
churches to Buddhist temples. Co-ordinated by the
Civic Trust in partnership with English Heritage, the
event relies on the enthusiasm and expertise of
local people. Thousands of volunteers from all walks
of life share their knowledge with some 850,000
visitors every year, making Heritage Open Days the
largest voluntary cultural event held in England.

Shopping is a very popular leisure activity with British

in city centres and out-of-town retail developments, such

part in a tourist's experience of a country. Excellent
restaurants in towns and cities across the UK give visitors
the chance to eat out with friends and relatives.
