Palazzo Vecchio
Plumb on Florence's most glorious square, this fortress
palace with striking crenellations and 94m-high tower was
the hub of political life in medieval Florence. Built for the
signoria
(city government) between 1298 and 1314, the
'Old Palace' played home to nine
priori
(consuls) - guild
members picked out of a hat every two months. In 1540
Cosimo I commissioned Vasari to renovate and redecorate
the upstairs apartments as his private residence, living here
for nine years before moving to Palazzo Pitti.
