Duomo
Properly titled the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore
(Cathedral of St Mary of the Flower), but usually referred
to as the duomo (another, often-used word meaning
'cathedral'), this magnificent building is the city's most
iconic landmark. Designed by Sienese architect Arnolfo di
Cambio, its construction started in 1296 and took almost
150 years. The result - distinctive red-tiled cupola dome,
graceful campanile (bell tower) and breathtaking pink,
white and green marble facade - has the wow factor in spades. Admission is free.
