Getting Around
Florence is mostly easily explored on foot, so tourists have little need to use the city's
transport. Exceptions are the bus services to Fiesole and Piazzale Michelangelo ( Click
here ) .
Siena and San Gimignano are easily accessed from Florence by bus. Pisa and Lucca are
best reached by train. To explore Chianti you'll need a car.
Car & Motorcycle
There are strict ZTLs ( Zone a Traffico Limitato; Limited Traffic Zones) in Florence, Si-
ena, Pisa, Lucca and San Gimignano. If you drive in them you risk a fine of up to €200.
Visit www.comune.fi.it for a map of Florence's ZTL.
In Florence, free street parking is available in Piazzale Michelangelo. Pricey (around €20
per day) underground parking can be found around Fortezza da Basso and in the Oltrarno
beneath Piazzale di Porta Romana. For other towns and cities, see individual sections for
details.
Bus
Buses and electric minibuses serve Florence, but are used by few tourists. Most start/ter-
minate at the ATAF bus stops opposite the southeastern exit of Stazione di Santa Maria
Novella. Tickets cost €1.20 and are sold at the ATAF ticket office adjoining the station.
Buses to the region depart from the Sita bus station off Piazza della Stazione.
Taxi
In most Tuscan cities, including Florence, taxis can't be hailed in the street. Ranks are
found close to train and bus stations; in Florence you can call 055 42 42 or 055 43
90.
